There are two training sessions offered at this year’s conference:

Session Topic #1:

Dam Inspection and Maintenance Course, Nelson, BC  October 18th, 2018

The Water Supply Association of BC is offering a one day Dam Inspection and Maintenance Course for dam operators, owners and other stakeholders. This course is being delivered in cooperation with Ministry of Forests, Lands & Natural Resource Operations, Water Management Branch.  Darren Bennett, FLNR and Kate Forbes, Dam Safety Officer for the Kootenays will be the presenters at this workshop. Course Fee:    $100 which will include lunch and coffee break.

The dam safety session is a full day course with a coffee break and lunch break.

Who Should Attend?  The one day course is intended for dam owners and staff who are inspecting and maintaining their dams.  The course does not cover dam design and dam engineering, but describes the basics in enough detail to enable owner/operators of smaller dams to undertake dam surveillance and annual inspections.

Course Description:  The course begins with general information about dam safety including a video about a dam failure in the Cariboo which had a significant impact on the Dam Safety Program in BC. Following that there is an overview of the BC Dam Safety Regulation and the Dam Safety Compliance Program.  The remainder of the course includes: organizing and preparing for a dam safety inspection, visual evaluation of dam condition and identification of visual deficiencies, evaluation of seepage conditions, assessment of spillways and outlets, basic hydraulic and hydrologic adequacy, failure modes and inspection and testing of gates, valves, and other mechanical systems.  A field trip to a local dam is scheduled in the early afternoon.    Map to Dam Site will be posted shortly.

Session Topic #2:

Thursday, October 18th, 2018

GROUNDWATER AND SURFACE WATER SAMPLE COLLECTION AND MONITORING TECHNIQUES

The Water Supply Association is offering a one day training session on Thursday October 18th for operators. This training session instructed by Allan D. Robison, a Senior Environmental Consultant from Keltech Environmental Ltd. will offer proper sampling techniques for both drinking water, source water and groundwater sampling with some asbestos awareness in buildings. Following the classroom presentation, operators will spend a few hours out in the field at a groundwater well site.

Course Fee:  $100.00 Lunch and coffee provided.

CEU credits  will be announced once EOCP reviews the course.  (.6 Potential)
